“Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious...and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney
Comfort. It’s something we all enjoy. Some of us much more than others. :-)
And, of course, we all simply LOVE to stay nice and secure in our own personal comfort zone too. Now, I’m not about to say that your comfort zone is a bad thing. In fact, it’s a good thing for most of us. It’s a place where we can feel secure and safe.
However, as with everything else in life…there is a downside.
Living in your comfort zone also means that your personal growth is limited and moves along at the speed of a racing snail in a Minnesota snow storm. :-)
Hear me right though. I’m NOT saying that you can’t grow and change and improve while existing in your comfort zone, it’s just a slower process. MUCH slower.
I think it’s one of the reasons that people fear change so much. Change takes you out of your comfort zone. It forces you to adjust, adapt, improve, and take a risk. For most people…that’s going to scare the shit out of them.
But it doesn’t have to. In fact, I would say that you shouldn’t live in your comfort zone. I believe that it should be a safe place where you can recharge, rest, and relax before launching out again.
Think about it for a moment. Do you think that anyone discovered something new, sitting safely in their comfort zone? Do you think that Columbus was in his comfort zone when he lost sight of land? Or how about the first astronauts when the engines of their rocket fired up? How about Rosa Parks when she said she wasn’t going to move?
All these people share several things. First…they definitely were NOT in their comfort zones. They were also able to deal with the fear of the moment. And they rose above their own personal limitations.
I think that we should all try to make this year a year of change. Even if it’s only something small. But it’s going to take you getting out of that comfort zone you’re sitting in, taking a risk, and making the most of whatever happens.
Even if you DON’T succeed at whatever you’re trying, you can still learn, grow, and become more than you were before you tried. It’s the quickest and most effective way to make change and grow in your life.
I know that I’ve used this quote before, but it’s just SO damn appropriate here too.
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" – Albert Einstein
So stop doing the same thing over and over. Try something new. Take a chance. Get out there and actually live your life.
Then stop by my place for the party. :-)
